The e61 Institute is seeking an applied research manager with a background in household-level and firm-level micro data research. You will manage a team of researchers and oversee the delivery of key policy research programs, providing data-driven insights into some of Australia’s most pressing economic and social challenges.
e61 is based in Sydney and Canberra with a world-class research team and an eminent global network of academic fellows. It is Australia’s leading data-driven research institute. It brings together problem-solvers from academia, industry and government to produce high-quality and policy-relevant research. e61 combines innovative data with state-of-the-art tools from economics and data science to answer important social science questions.
e61 is currently investigating a range of policy-relevant research topics, including:
- The effect of changes in income support policies on household labour supply and spending decisions
- The potential effect of structural reforms on firm-level productivity and economic dynamism
- The state of competition and market power in Australia

What we are looking for
The ideal candidate should have:
- Minimum five years’ work experience, including in applied microeconomic data research, in Australia or abroad. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in research areas such as: household finance, labour markets, health, productivity, education and/or disadvantage
- Completed an honours degree (or equivalent) or above in economics, econometrics, data science or a related field. Postgraduate training is preferred but not essential, particularly if you have a proven research track record
Successful applicants will be expected to produce high-quality research, lead research teams and work with the leadership group to develop the e61 research program. This will require the successful candidate to:
- Manage researchers, delegate effectively and provide constructive feedback
- Produce high-quality economic research and provide advice to stakeholders
- Communicate complex analysis in non-technical terms and produce clear recommendations
- Develop the skills of staff and help to recruit and build the talent pool of applied micro data researchers in Australia
- Promote a vibrant, collaborative and inclusive workplace culture
