Abstract:
|
Using the Progresa data from Mexico, we investigate intra-household decision making using a variety of outcomes. We exploit both the experimental nature and the (short) panel dimension of the data to measure the impact of changes in the intra-household distribution of resources on household decisions and test for several models of intra-household allocation. Using a variety of outcomes, we test for global pooling of resources, which would correspond to the unitary model of household decision making. We also test some of the implications of the collective model. We finally exploit a set of questions about the decision making process and power in the household to investigate the extent of strategic interaction between household members.
