The following are frequently-asked questions that have arrived at the Econometric Society web site over the past year. Answers are provided to questions we are frequently asked and to other questions as well. Feel free to address further questions to the web site and let us know if any of the answers provided here are not clear.
Q: What does it mean to be a member of the Econometric Society? A: Members automatically receive the journal Econometrica six times per year. The journal is one of the top three journals in the economics profession when ranked by citations to the articles which appear there. Membership rates (Individuals) are very reasonable and are actually lower now than ten years ago. Preferential very low membership rates are available for students from all regions and regular members from countries outside the OECD.
Q: How do I join? A: On the left navigation bar of this website you can click on Personal Membership or Library subscription. You will be taken to a list of current rates and by clicking on the appropriate rate will be provided an electronic order form that you can fill out on-line, paying by credit card on a secure server, or that you can download and submit by mail or fax.
Q: What benefits do members receive besides a subscription to Econometrica? A: Members have the opportunity to be listed in the Society's electronic Directory of Members and are allowed, with password protection, to provide augmented entries, lists of publications, and links to their own web sites, thus greatly augmenting the potential worldwide audience for their research. Other benefits include password-protected access by members to all recent and past issues of Econometrica, for those members whose institutions are not subscribers to JSTOR or Synergy; 20% discount on all Blackwell Publishing titles; travel grant opportunities to the World Congresses. Members also receive mailed notification of future meetings in their own region. Every regional meeting provides a discount to members equal to the current membership fee for that region. Also, book exhibitors at E. S. meetings provide substantial discounts on most or all of their books, and the Cambridge University Press offers a discount of 40 percent to members for volumes in the Econometric Society monograph series.

Q: Is there any difference between being a member and being a subscriber? A: For individuals there is no difference. Institutions (like libraries) pay a different rate and do not receive the other benefits of membership.
Q: To whom do I complain if I do not receive my journals after joining directly or at a regional meeting? What if I have been receiving my issues and an issue is skipped or missing pages? A: Send an e-mail containing your name and journal mailing address to cs-membership@wiley.com
Q: To whom do I send notification of a change in the mailing address for my journal? A: Send an e-mail containing your name and old/new journal mailing addresses to the Blackwell Customer Services Department at cs-membership@wiley.com

Q: How do I change or augment my entry in the E. S. Directory of Members? A: Click on the Amend your profile link on the left navigation bar of this web site and follow the instructions given there. Members must login on the site with their username and password to change or augment their own entries. If you can't remember the username you registered with, please contact cs-websites@wiley.com.
The registration process is necessary because only you can access your own individual profile and so this part of the site has been password protected to prevent any other member or any non-member amending your personal member profile without you knowing.
Q: Will changing my details affect where the paper copy of the society journal is sent? A: When you change your address in the E. S. Directory, at the bottom of the form you have the option to tick the box marked as "Yes, update membership details at Blackwells": if you select it an automatic message will be sent to Customer Services to update the details where the journal is sent; if you don't select it the changes on the Directory won't affect where the paper copy of the society journal is sent.
Q: How can I find an e-mail address or web site URL for a member of the Society? A: Click on the Search the Directory link on the right navigation bar. Search for the member you are looking for using one or more of the searching criteria provided. Please remember that some members are listed with initials as their first names therefore you should search them using the surname. You will then receive a list of all the names of members that match your search criteria. Choose the member that you were looking for from the list by clicking on their name, and you will then be taken to the individual page, which shows the full member profile.
If an e-mail address or URL is not listed for a given member, this means that the member has not provided it. Members can add home page URL's and e-mail addresses to their directory entries.

Q: I have been searching for my colleague who I know is a member but cannot seem to find him in the directory. What do I do? A: If you receive 0 results for any particular search, all you need to do is click the back button and try different searching criteria and you should eventually receive some results. If you do not, the person you are looking for may not be a member, but if you are sure they are then all you need to do is contact the electronic helpdesk at cs-websites@wiley.com and we shall look into this for you.
Q: I could not find information on the European or Latin American meeting for years ending in 0 or 5. Why? A: During years ending in "0" or "5" the World Congress supersedes all regional meetings except for the North American Winter meeting.
Q: Does every regional meeting require submission of electronic versions of papers? Are full papers required or are abstracts acceptable? A: Every meeting differs. The rules even differ within a region from one meeting to another. The definitive answer to any question about the method and format of submissions appears on the "Call for Papers" which is available under the Meetings section of this web site. Each "Call for Papers" is also published in Econometrica several months after it first appears on the web site.

Q: I just found out about a meeting and am past the submission deadline. Are the submission deadlines firm? A: Some meeting organizers allow latitude of a few days for mail delays, although this has become less common for meetings which encourage electronic submission. In no cases do organizers allow submissions to arrive more than one week past the stated deadline.
Q: I am looking for information about a meeting next year and cannot find it on your web site. Why? A: The web site can only post information received from organizers. If you are inquiring after July 1 of the year prior to the particular meeting and it is not listed under Future Meetings on our web site, this means that the organizers are late in providing their "Call for Papers" and other information.
Q: I want to submit a paper to Econometrica. How many copies do I submit? To where? Can I submit electronically? A: Click on the Submissions link on the left navigation bar of this web site, under the Econometrica tab, to find full instructions about submission to the journal.
Q: I represent a commercial organization and want to download your mailing list. Is that allowed? A: No, our mailing list is the property of the Econometric Society and is protected from downloading.
Q: OK, then, how do I place an advertisement in your journal or rent your mailing list? A: Contact Claire Sashi at sashi@econometricsociety.org.
